change and movement

I saw an excellent film yesterday "La Journee de la jupe". It explores multi-culturalism, immigration and social issues from the perspective of a secondary school teacher in L'ile de France. It managed to combine humour with an important and interesting message. I recommend it. I also saw a terrible film. Being slightly obsessed with all things cello and having seen an excellent trailer for "The Soloist" I decided to see it this week. I was left shocked at the absolute sense of disappointment I got from this film. It was not only cliched but revealed the entire story in the trailer and managed to make the film look like something it wasn't. It wasn't profound, it didn't have a message, it didn't communicate much except that the trailer had been made to get people into the cinema full stop. It was unfulfilling and unrewarding to say the least. Go see "Skirt Day" instead. On the same theme, another excellent French film which I saw earlier this year was "Entre les murs/The class". Both films explore the frustration and irritation of dealing with the most difficult aspects of education from the perspective of a teacher which I found enlightening and timely. I must say that I preferred "Skirt Day" if pushed to recommend just one; the humour and the tragedy mingle nicely to create a powerful piece of work.
On the topic of cosmopolitan, multi-cultural societies I watched Nick Griffin on Question Time and was thoroughly disgusted. There are two sides to the story. His abhorrent, vile beliefs were revealed and I hope that will put British people off him and his party. On the other hand he was attacked. And that leads to an "underdog" mentality. I wish they had encouraged a proper debate, a serious political q&a in order to expose not only his disgusting views but his inadequacy as a politican and a leader.

So, a weekend. My second one for a while. Last weekend was spent in Braga. This weekend i'm hoping to pay a visit to teh Serralves Institute(Contemporary Art Museum) in Porto. And enjoy free time. Therefore, goodbye.
